Ensemble - History of Anima Musica

last updated August 2010

Anima Musica has been contributing to Montreal's musical life since it was founded in 1973 as the Donovan Chorale, by John and Bernadette Donovan. The latter served as artistic director from the choir's inception to the 1985-86 season. Subsequent conductors included Fred Stolzfus, Constantina Tsolainou and Winston Purdy. Andrée Dagenais then served as Anima Musica's artistic director from 1993 to 1999. Geneviève Boulanger has been Anima Musica's musical director since September 2000.

Anniversary and Special Concerts

Anima Musica celebrated its 30th anniversary in May 2004 with a grand Mozart gala concert at McGill University's Redpath Hall. In May 2006, in this same venue, the choir presented a concert of German baroque music that was greatly appreciated by the audience. In addition to its regular season, Anima Musica occasionally performs at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Château Ramezay Museum and the World Choral Festival.

Repertoire

The choir is always interested in sharing new musical experiences and presents concerts with specific themes. Aurora Borealis explored the repertoire of Nordic music, Gaudete featured music of medieval inspiration an, Navidad in España transported the audience to southern climes. Anima Musica devotes its spring concerts to great choral works such as Bach's cantata Aus der Tiefe rufe ich and the Fauré Requiem.
